Projects at St Mary's

ST MARY'S APPEAL

Disabled lavatory and access. Plans are now drawn up and we are in the process of fundraising. We need to raise around £42,000. More to follow... If you would like to make a donation please contact me or the treasurer. (Cheques can be made payable to St Mary's PCC).

We would like to thank the following for donations/grants so far made to our appeal:
Handsworth Community Trust
The Duke of Norfolk
Lord Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury

Handsworth Jubilee Gardens we have a piece of derelict land to the East of the church and behind the Parish Centre. This would have been a kitchen garden for the previous rectory (now the Old Rectory) and for some years was used as allotments. This new project will be an opportunity to grow your own fruit and veg and to get your hands dirty without the responsibility of an allotment and will be available to all in our community of Handsworth.

The aims of the project is to use this derelict land to provide opportunities to bring local people together, inclusive of age, gender, physical ability, experience etc..., to grow and eat your own produce, promote healthy eating, recycle waste, composting, physical activity, improve access to the environment, reduce pollution, build stronger community and learn new skills.... in a friendly safe environment.  If you would like to know more please email me or call Vince Kerridge on 07833546640.

Flying the flag A flag pole has been erected in the graveyard in time to commemorate HM The Queen's Diamond Jubilee. The flag will be raised for the first time by Cllr Jackie Satur to mark the opening of the Jubilee street party at the Parish Centre.

Graveyard The graveyard has now been closed by an Order In Council (Privy Council) this is because there is no room for any new burials. It is still possible to bury cremated remains in our designated area and bury cremated remains or body in family graves where space permits. We continue to improve the graveyard and to plant lots of daffodils donated by Sheffield City Council.

Pastoral Some members of the congregation have undertaken training and are now involved with a healing ministry and a bereavement visitors team for St Mary's. We also have a young man undertaking Reader training and a young woman training in children's ministry.

If you would like to know more or become involved please contact me.
